This educational CD-ROM is unique in its range and perspective. It starts at an elementary level, and then step-by-step explains in more detail the key events of mitosis and meiosis. It demystifies the seemingly magical processes involved. It was produced especially for secondary school students, but also offers important resource material for undergraduate university courses. The facts and the whys and the hows of mitosis and meiosis are presented, in two separate programs. A broader perspective is also given, including how mitosis is related to the cell cycle, development and cell differentiation; and the importance of meiosis to life cycles and genetics. The material used is new, high quality, exciting and superbly presented. Students and teachers alike get to love these twin, lookalike programs. Their use of the principles of teaching, of up-to-date scientific knowledge, and a range of multimedia tools, combine to make them quite unique.

«This is an excellent application for either individual learning or for whole class teaching. It is ideal because the pathways offered give the student true choice and involvement in the activities, resulting in real learning.» -- Hannah Strange (Nottinghill and Ealing High School, London) in Journal of Biological Education

«It kept an AS class happily learning for 40 minutes with the silence only being broken with 'ooh cool - look at this....» -- Hannah Strange (Nottinghill and Ealing High School, London) in Journal of Biological Education

Mutations - changes to the gene make-up of an organism - are hugely important. Most of them are deleterious, in that they cause abnormalities and diseases. But sometimes they turn out to have neutral or even beneficial effects. In this way, mutations are ultimately responsible for all the genetic variation that we see in populations of humans and other species. And it is this genetic variation that allows evolutionary changes to take place. On top of all this, mutations enable us to study the genes themselves, to locate them, to study their inheritance, to isolate them, to correct them, to use them. Mutations, therefore, underpin virtually all aspects of genetics ! This is why we have put together this comprehensive program, in which we introduce the types, origins and consequences of both gene (DNA) and chromosome mutations; and then illustrate their short term effects (such as in cancer, inborn errors and disease) and their long term (evolutionary) importance. We included a large number of photographs, illustrations and animations, from humans, animals and plants.

This CD-ROM presents a complete and updated overview of the rattan and bamboo species of SE Asia, and is produced by ETI and PROSEA. It provides information on some 130 rattan species and over 75 bamboo species and includes detailed descriptions, videos on both commodities, colour photographs of the majority of species, botanical illustrations, a hyperlinked illustrated glossary of technical terms and a reference database with less-accessible literature from SE Asia. The hyperlinked program offers a matrix-based search possibility for species per country or secondary use. Rattans are the source of cane for the cane-furniture industry, while at the same time being used for a wealth of minor purposes locally. Most cane entering world trade is collected from the wild, and throughout much of South-East Asia rattan represents the most important forest product after timber. Bamboos have been of great importance in rural communities in tropical Asia for centuries. Their value or potential value has been largely underestimated. In recent years the commercialization of bamboo exploitation for commodities such as bamboo shoots, bamboo boards, chopsticks, pulp for paper manufacture, and bamboo handicrafts, has caused an increase in the demand for the raw material. This CD-ROM rightfully belongs in any scientific library and in the reference collections of botanists, rattan or bamboo experts as well as anyone dealing with rattans or bamboos.

This CD-ROM, compiled by specialists, provides an up-to-date information system with concise descriptions, detailed drawings and color photographs of seedlings of 123 taxa of secondary forest trees representing 40 plant families. A user-friendly computer-aided identification key supports a quick and reliable identification of seedlings. An extensive glossary of terms and literature database completes the accessibility of this e-monograph. An important part of practicing sustainable forest management is the reforestation of forest areas that are damaged by fires or by other destructive activities like logging or mining. A wide variety of trees are used for this purpose. However, since individual plant species often have specific environmental requirements, some species are obviously more suitable for reforestation than others. This requires much emphasis on the correct identification of seedlings. The CD-ROM is a valuable information tool to enable (local) forest managers without a thorough botanical background to identify many of the secondary forest tree species of East Kalimantan.

Seaweed represents a major component of marine ecosystems. It is used as food, fertiliser and as a resource for chemical constituents. This interactive multimedia DVD-ROM was compiled over a three year period and incorporates the expertise of almost 150 authorities from all over the world. The extensive information is organised in a number of categories covering cultivation, farming, utilisation, worldwide resources, socio-economics, recent developments in ecology, and applied phycology. The subjects are covered in detail and includes vivid examples ranging from food and cosmetics to medicine, with examples from major production centers worldwide and includes practical aspects of modern farming. The information is enriched by numerous high quality pictures and exclusive video footage. Extensive web reference links are provided to help locate additional information. This unique electronic reference system is the first in this field and holds more information than could ever be published in a book. World Seaweed Resources will enthuse the user and provide insight and practical, easily accessible hands-on information. The user-friendly nature of this DVD-ROM makes it ideal for teaching or self-study. It can be used as a stand-alone resource or to complement text books. It should be available to marine biologists in general and to workers in the seaweed farming community, and should certainly be in the personal library of all phycologists, whether professional or student. The production of World Seaweed Resources was sponsored by Degussa Texturant Systems.

Yeasts are not only essential for the production of bread, beer and wine, but also play a major role in many more modern industrial processes, such as the production of enzymes, pigments, antioxydants etc. Moreover many yeasts are important as human pathogens, or as spoilage organisms in the food industry. This CD-ROM offers a multi-disciplinary approach to the identification of all known species of this fascinating group of micro-organisms and has been produced by leading experts in the field. It not only contains descriptions and photographs of the morphology, but also a complete set of physiological data as well as ribosomal DNA sequences. All these data can be used for an interactive identification of unknown yeast isolates. In addition there are hyperlinked introductory and explanatory texts, a glossary and a selection of important literature.

This taxonomic reference work, produced by ETI and the Zoological Museum of the University of Amsterdam, provides an up-to-date multimedia catalogue and interactive identification guide for almost 470 species of zooplankton (>1 mm) and micronekton occurring in the North Sea. This CD-ROM contains two types of identification keys (picture based and text based) and a taxonomic database holding names, synonyms, descriptions, illustrations and references. Groups treated are the Medusae, Siphonophora, Ctenophora, Chaetognatha, planktonic Tunicata and Polychaeta, pelagic Gastropoda and Cephalopoda, and a vast group of planktonic Crustacea, with the exception of Copepoda and larvae. Larvae of polychaetes, gastropods, bivalves and fishes are not included at species level; they are subject to a second version of this CD-ROM. All text is hyperlinked, enabling quick navigation through the information. This CD-ROM facilitates monitoring studies, and is a standard work for marine biologists, environmentalists and students to identify North Sea zooplankton and micronekton.

About ETI's CD-ROMs and other releases

ETI produces, together with its partners, taxonomic 'e-monographs' on CD-ROM or DVD-ROM, as well as video DVDs and PhotoCDs to document the world's biodiversity resources and to provide scientists, students, eco-managers and other users with quality up-to-date taxonomic and biodiversity information systems. These efforts are part of our contribution to the Species Bank Programme of the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF).

The World Biodiversity Database CD-ROM Series

These CD-ROMs and DVD-ROMs are based on ETI's Linnaeus II content management software (or comparable ETI-supported software) and contain multimedia taxonomic databases, computer-assisted identification keys and interactive geographic information systems. They either encompass a taxon (regionally or worldwide), or contain a biodiversity information system covering species diversity in a specified geographic region. These titles provide detailed and complete information systems that are to be used as state of the art taxonomic references works for bio-monitoring purposes, biodiversity documentation, etc. The information on some of these CD-ROMs and DVD-ROMs is derived from ETI's Partner Networks or from collaborative programmes with partner institutions. Linnaeus II-based information systems can also be published online and made accessible through ETI's World Biodiversity Database.
